Tsillan Cellars was designed and developed by Dr. Robert Jankelson to provide an unmatched venue to enjoy the Italian art of la dolce vita, the sweet life. Karma Vineyards

Explore this small vineyard that boasts 14 acres of selected varietals including Gewürztraminer, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier. Karma Vineyards rests on the beautiful south shore of Lake Chelan where its north facing slope creates a relatively late harvest season. Known for our sparkling wine, Karma Vineyards was the first vineyard in Chelan to cane prune Pinot Noir grapes. A technique commonly used with the Oregon Pinot Noir, we decided to try this method in 2006 with the goal of decreasing potential mildew, very common in this thin skinned tight clustered grape. Increased airflow has been key in creating a disease free Pinot Noir block that has continually produced excellent Pinot Noir. The Gewürztraminer is dry farmed, as it sits on a high water table, and produces a beautiful balance of sugar and acidity each year. Gorgeous fruit that is later made in the Alsatian style has continually yielded rave reviews from our Karma customers. Owner Julie Pittsinger studied viticulture at Washington State University and oversees this vineyard. Theodoro Nunez, vineyard manager, has been with Karma for eight years and brings a wealth of experience in keeping our vineyards incredibly prosperous, healthy, and beautiful.

Our vineyards surround one of the largest lakes in the United States, spanning over 50 miles in length. We experience what is called the lake effect, moderating temperatures in both summer and winter. The result is consistent temperatures, a long growing season, and reduced risk of extreme winter freeze. Our soils are pretty great too... layers of glacial debris, loess, volcanic pumice and ash have made for more than a century of tremendously successful horticulture in the area. We were inspired to create our Winery on a trip to Italy in 2002. We stayed at an incredible Italian Villa and Winery right in the heart of Tuscany, in the little town of Radda in Chianti, called Livernano. We were there during the harvest and were encouraged to help with the harvest and crush of the grapes. There, we were treated like Royalty, with a private 5 star Chef that cooked our meals, we got to drink incredible wines with the 8 other guests from around the world and we became very close with the owner of the Winery. We had such an incredible experience that when we returned, we wanted to create a similar experience for people who come here to Lake Chelan to visit. We had experienced what they call "Agritourismo,"and believe that it will be something very special here in Chelan as well. When we asked the owner if he had any advise he could give us for our Winery back in the States, he simply said "make your wine for your own tastes, your own palate, it will be unique and will represent you." The benefit of making the wine to your own taste is that if no one else likes it, and it doesn't sell, at least you'll enjoy drinking it! These are the wisest words, and we did exactly that, we made our wines to our own personal tastes. Vinifera grapes have been grown in Washington State since the 1800’s, but Washington State is a a relatively young wine region. Despite that, Washington State has become the nation’s second largest wine producer and its wineries are consistently ranked among the world’s top wine regions. What makes Washington so unique is the magnificent Cascade Mountain range which creates a rain-shadow effect in the eastern side of the state. Most people don’t know that the terroir of the Columbia Valley is high desert—that means, you will experience long sunny days and cool nights. The difference between the daytime highs and the nighttime lows is referred to as a diurnal shift. The temperature change can be as much as 40 degrees! This allows our estate grown grapes to naturally lock in acidity to show that bright, fruit forward characteristic. Yet, unlike typical desert conditions, Washington has the mighty Columbia River to source its irrigation. Fun fact: The winery itself takes its name from the tumbled granite stones found at the Double D Vineyard site, which were used to line the 1.2 million gallon irrigation pond at its heart.
