Summer Isn’t Over: Your Guide to September and October in Lake Chelan
There’s a funny thing that happens after Labor Day. The calendar flips to September and suddenly everyone starts acting like summer is over.
Meanwhile, Lake Chelan did not get the memo.
September and October are some of the best months to visit the valley. The days are still warm (think mid 70s!), the summer crowds begin to thin, the lake is as beautiful as ever, and wineries, restaurants, shops, farms, and local businesses are still very much open and ready to welcome you.
The pace just changes a little. You can spend the morning outside, grab lunch downtown, head to a winery, brewery or cidery in the afternoon, and watch the sun drop behind the hills. As September turns to October, vineyards and orchards shift into harvest mode and the valley starts showing off an entirely different side of itself.
In other words, don’t put Lake Chelan away with your swimsuits just yet.
Is Fall the New Summer?
There is a lot to love about Lake Chelan in July and August, but September and October have their own special thing going on.
Sunny afternoons, impossibly blue skies, quieter mornings by the water, changing vineyards, fresh apples, harvest season, patio lunches, and plenty of reasons to stay outside.
Lake Chelan Wine Harvest stretches throughout the fall. Experience the winemaking process through vineyard tours, grape stomps, farm-to-table dinners, live music, and special releases. Farms and orchards are busy too, with apples, pumpkins, flowers, and other seasonal experiences adding an entirely different flavor to a Lake Chelan getaway.
You could also just still sit by the lake and do absolutely nothing. We strongly support that itinerary.
Not sure what your Lake Chelan trip should look like? We’ve planned three for you.
The Family Weekend
Friday: Arrive + Explore Downtown
Get into town, check into your lodging, and keep the first evening simple. Wander Historic Downtown Chelan, grab dinner somewhere the kids will actually eat, and take a walk through Riverwalk Park before calling it a night.
Saturday: Farms + Fall Adventures
Start the morning with breakfast before heading out for a little harvest season fun. Fall brings apple picking, pumpkin patches, flowers, farm animals, tractor rides, and other seasonal activities throughout the valley.
Spend the afternoon exploring. Take a family hike, play a round of mini golf, go bowling, visit a park, or simply find a spot near the lake and let everyone burn off some energy.
Then grab an early dinner and finish the day with ice cream or a sunset walk along the water.
Sunday: One More Lake Morning
Before heading home, grab coffee and breakfast, take the historical route through downtown Chelan (pick up a map at the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce) and squeeze in one last outdoor adventure. Fantastic weekend indeed!
The Romantic Getaway
Friday: Check In + Date Night
Leave work a little early if you can swing it. Check into your hotel, resort, vacation rental, or lakeside suite and head straight to dinner. Fall evenings are perfect for slowing things down over a great meal and a bottle of Lake Chelan wine.
If you’re not ready to call it a night, take a walk by the lake or find somewhere nearby with live music.
Saturday: Coffee, Wine + a Reset
Sleep in. Start with coffee and a slow breakfast, then spend the afternoon exploring Lake Chelan Wine Country. Choose a few wineries instead of trying to visit twelve. Sit on the patio. Order lunch. Look at the lake. Remember that you are supposed to be relaxing.
Head back to your room before dinner, get dressed up, and visit a restaurant you’ve been wanting to try.
Sunday: Brunch + One Last View
Find brunch, take the scenic route, and enjoy the views that never disappoint. You could also extend your stay another night. We encourage it.
Friends (The One Where They Visit Lake Chelan)
Friday: Congratulations! Everyone actually committed to a weekend.
Check in, meet up for dinner, and find live music, drinks, games, or somewhere to hang out for the evening. Downtown Chelan and Manson both make easy jumping off points for a weekend with friends.
Saturday: Pick Your Adventure
This is where you have options.
Start with breakfast and then divide the day between outdoor adventure and wine country. Go hiking, play pickleball or golf, explore downtown, visit local farms, or spend the afternoon tasting your way around the valley.
Fall also brings a packed calendar of events. Depending on when you visit, you may find live music, harvest celebrations, grape stomps, markets, tasting room events, or signature festivals like Brews on the Bridge.
Make dinner reservations, rally the group, and finish the night somewhere with good food, good wine, and preferably no discussion about who is splitting which appetizer.
Sunday: Recovery, Chelan Style
Coffee. Brunch. Lake views.
Maybe a little shopping downtown before heading home. Definitely a discussion about making this an annual trip.
The boats may become fewer and the mornings a little quieter, but that’s exactly what makes September and October so delicious. The tasting rooms are pouring. Restaurants are serving. Shops are open. Harvest is underway. Events are happening. And the lake is still right where you left it!
So if your summer plans didn’t quite go according to plan, consider this your redo. Grab the family. Text the group chat. Plan the weekend away.
