LAKE CHELAN, WA (September 5, 2017) — As expected by fire managers, the fire continued to grow yesterday to the northeast and throughout the Safety Harbor drainage. There is still a Level 1 evacuation notice (prepare and be aware) for two private inholdings along the lake, the Llama Ranch area to the south and Canoe Creek to the north. The fire remains approximately 3 miles from these areas. Crews began structure protection in the Canoe Creek and Llama Ranch areas.
Fire managers confirmed the fire destroyed the historic Crow Cabin, in spite of continuous efforts using multiple water drops by a Sky Crane helicopter. Two helicopters on the fire also continued to work the Safety Harbor drainage to slow fire growth. Dozers and hand crews continued to build and strengthen the indirect primary line down Coyote Ridge.
Today: Crews will continue to work on the indirect primary line, and provide structure protection in the Llama Ranch and Canoe Creek areas. To increase productivity and firefighter safety by reducing travel times, crews in two divisions are staying in a “spike camp” at the fire near Coyote Ridge.
Fire weather conditions remain at critical levels. Humidity recovery was poor last night and relative humidity will be low again today. Temperatures are forecasted for near record levels in the mid-80s to low-90s. This, along with fuel moisture levels at a seasonal low, will continue to lead to explosive fire conditions.
Smoke: Heavy smoke from the Uno Fire, as well as many others around the region, will stay in the valleys in the morning due to an air inversion that will lift later in the day. After the inversion lifts, expect smoke to continue to drift down Lake Chelan and be highly visible from the communities of Manson, Chelan, Pateros, Brewster and Twisp. More information about smoke and your health is available at wasmoke.blogspot.com.
Closures: Expect new closures in the Foggy Dew and Gold Creek Rd areas in the Methow Valley. Current closures include the Grade Creek Rd to the intersection with FS 4330-600 is now closed. Trail closures: Uno Peak Trail, Safety Harbor Trail, Summit Trail and Summer Blossom. The Deer Point and Safety Harbor Campgrounds are also closed.
