Your Late-Summer Lake Chelan Guide
Late summer in the valley is a local’s dream. With the lake at its warmest and the morning sun dancing across the water, it’s hard to resist spending your days on the lake, or your nights in town.
To help you make the most of the season, we’re taking a look at the major design overhauls reshaping the downtown waterfront, plus the premier cultural event taking over the avenue this month.
The New Lakeside Trail & Park
If you haven’t driven down West Woodin Avenue recently, the long-awaited Lakeside Trail connection and the Lakeside Park upgrades are officially complete.
Here’s what went into making the area significantly better for walking, swimming, and hanging out:
1. The Lakeside Trail Connection
Engineers actually shifted Highway 97A slightly north to build a wide, paved, non-motorized trail along the water. It gives you a safe, 1.18-mile path running directly from downtown to the Lakeside corridor.
2. A Fully Accessible Lakeside Park
Lakeside Park underwent a complete 9-month makeover designed with modern accessibility in mind:
- The New T-Dock: Built to give swimmers, anglers, and paddleboarders plenty of room to jump in or launch without crowding the shore.
- Expanded Beach: Construction crews expanded the sandy footprint inland, giving you much more room to lay out a towel.
- ADA-Compliant Pathways & Playground: New paved connections run from the parking area down to the water, alongside a brand-new, fully accessible playground for kids.
- Upgraded Facilities: A brand-new restroom building doubled the stall capacity and added outdoor handwashing stations.
On the Horizon: Cultura on the Lake
Hosted by the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce, Cultura on the Lake is an open-air celebration of Chicano and lowrider car culture. It brings together custom vehicles, vibrant regional art, food, and music right into the historic heart of Downtown Chelan.
It’s an event that highlights artistic craftsmanship, from candy-paint finishes and hydraulics to detailed chrome work and custom interior upholstery, while bringing a lively, family-friendly energy to Woodin Avenue.
Key Event Highlights (Saturday, August 29)
- The “Low & Slow” Cruise (4pm – 4:15pm): The event kicks off as participating custom rides, classic street trucks, and lowriders gather at Miller’s Lake Chelan Auto Museum, cross the historic Chelan Bridge, and roll slowly down Woodin Avenue into downtown.
- Chrome & Cultura on the Ave (5pm – 8pm): Woodin Avenue closes to traffic, transforming into a walking display of custom vehicles alongside a live DJ, local vendors, folkloric dancers, and a Kids Zone with activities and crafts.
- Special Screening: Roll Modelz Documentary: A Lowrider Documentary. Roll Modelz is an award-winning short documentary about how the often misunderstood culture of lowrider cars brings people together, especially during times of loss. The film tells the story of the WA State Lowriders Car Club based in Walla Walla, Washington, and how they honor the memory of Mya Kay Avila.
- The Sip Stop: Visit Registration HQ to cool off. Enjoy local craft beverages (21+) or non-alcoholic
options available for all ages.
- Cultura Awards & After Dark (8pm – 10pm):
- Awards: Our awards celebrate the craftsmanship, creativity, and dedication behind every custom build, from flawless chrome to bold paint and every detail in between.
- After the awards, the celebration keeps going. Registrants and spectators are invited to stay downtown for gorgeous lake views, the Sunset Street Market, dancing and a DJ set by JCP from Summerland Ent, going until 10pm.
